Tutorial 3

A simple tutorial on how to make this icon:

Step 1: Preparing Your Base

I'd just discovered the Everlasting music video by BoA and fell in love with all the images so I screen capped and set out to make icons. So to start I took one of the images from the the video:

and cropped it down to 100x100, so it looked like this:

Now I found that that was way too blurry for my liking, so I used the sharpen tool twice. Then, I wasn't sure whether it was light enough or not, so I duplicated it and set it to Screen. Then it was too light so I thought I'd see what it would look like with a bit more contrast, so I instead set the layer to Soft Light(100%), where it looked good, so I kept it like this:

I liked how it looked, so I decided that it would be fine for my base. I merged the layers and moved on.

Step 2: Blue Exclusion Layer

To start, I made a new raster layer. I filled it in with a dark blue (#003371) and set the layer to Exclusion(25%-35%).

Step 3: Green Burn Layer

Next I made another new raster layer and filled it with a pale green (#A3C9A1). I set this layer to Burn(33%).

Step 3: Texture

I like to try and use at least one texture in all my icons. For this one, I decided to use a texture from the Inner City base set by [info]yumei_k found HERE. There are several textures from the pack that would work. Ones containing blues, beiges and blacks work best for this tutorial. For this specific icon though, I chose this texture:

I pasted it onto it's own layer and set it to Soft Light(100%). Now your icon should look like this:

Step 4: Extras

From here on out, it's all up to you as to what you put on the icon. For this icon, I chose to add text and a border. The text is Sell Your Soul set to sie 7 (Alone) or size 1 for the tiny text. The border was simple. I went to Selections > Select All, then went back and went Selections > Modify > Contract and when the pop up box came up, I set it to 3 pixels. Then I went Selections > Invert and painted it in white. Then I went a repeated the same steps again, only this time I only contracted by 1 pixel. I filled it in with a dark green that was found on the icon using the eyedropper tool (#34825C).

So all you have to do is add what you want and you're finished! Huzzah!
